Operation Organization

{Photo ~ BHG}
Feeling refreshed after our Christmas Holiday ~ we were inspired by Amy Meier’s office design above! Wanting to create our own organizational area, we set off to Ikea for the Expedit shelving unit.
We thought it would work well in the empty space behind the front door.
To our dismay ~ we realized our measurements were off my 5”. We didn’t love that it practically stuck out past the door frame. After about an hour of debating whether or not to return the whole thing ~ we had the idea to turn the end unit 90 degrees.

Check back soon to see where this goes next.

  2. I love Expedit shelving, and I am totally impressed by the way you've turned lemons into lemonade in this situation. We've all done it - hauled a huge item home, only to discover we're off by a hair. I can relate to the phase where you groan at the thought of hauling it all back to the store in defeat. I think turning the unit 90 degrees gives this a custom built-in look.

  3. I just saw this on pinterest and was wondering if you had just turned it 90 degrees. That is so clever!!! I'm in the process of organizing stuff and always looking for good ideas. Thanks for sharing! Katharine

  5. This look great! I am wondering as I have the Expedit as well, was this all one big unit and somehow you turned the end piece? I can't wrap my brain around how this was done to one unit. Yes, I am one of those uncreative minds that really doesn't get it

  6. Hi, Shari! Completely understandable how this is confusing as Ikea does sell large one-piece units. For ours we used 3 individual Expedits ~ linked here:

    Thanks so much for reading ~ let us know if you have any additional questions!

  7. I am wanting to do this in my daughters shared room but am confused about turning the end unit 90 degrees when the Width and depth deminsions aren't the same per Ikea. Did you pull the other 2 out from the wall somehow?

  8. Hi, White Family!

    You are correct that the other 2 units are pulled out slightly from the wall. Because our unit is placed in the corner ~ this feature isn't noticeable. Hope this helps and good luck with your daughters' room!

  9. LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS, I may just have to do the same but in a big empty wall in my kitchen. So now that I understand how all the cabinets appear flush on the front end, how did you secure those 2 from toppling over since they are not against the wall at all. Also, are all three connected together as well? You have certainly pulled it off as it appears to be 1 big custom cabinet. Gr8 job! -1st time visitor, glad I stopped by.
